Artist's Statement

"I do not really remember which were precisely my first influences in painting, but they could have been associated to abstract art or expresionism in the technical side. However, there is no doubt that it was the human figure that captivated both form and sense in my work. I have devoted myself to reflecting some realism one way or another, since it makes credible the ideas that I want to express and shows the real magnitude of the human being. And to allow those who are not acquainted with my paintings to feel, at least, an aesthetic pleasure, which Art should never be deprived of.

Among my beliefs as a painter lies the idea somewhat naïve that the more realist the painting, the greatest the possibility that the message will be understood and thus the empathy towards the public that is less exposed each day to art and its interpretations. I do not pretend to say anything of great importance, but I trust my paintings to transmit the zest of spectating and thinking simoultaneously, a goal pretty challenging nowadays where the media rules and the message is imposed massively. Unfortunately, this phenomenon is at this point unstoppable and Art has no other choice than to cooperate in the media avalanche. Superficiality is abondant in all aspects of life, therefore there is no use in going deep into the conscience of the public, I have chosen to touch them the most natural way possible, through the sight, and to express my ideas in the most familiar form, the human figure.

The children are the central point at this stage because they touch the deepest feelings of common people. Needless to say that this is a dangerous path to take when one tries to relate in a painting the crazyness of today’s everyday life with the fake idealist shell in which we attemp hipocritically to wrap our children. I will not paint children dying in war or of hunger, because I know without question that is not what people want to see and I do not think that would have more effect than a simple picture. On the other hand, the children are a reflection of the way we live and how we spoil our cultures by imposing infant models that await a worse future.

In my work, I have frquently and conveniently used mythological or religious themes because, despite the fact that I do not share any religious belief, I do understand the transcendence and importance some people give to it and the richness of humanistic ideals so abundant in these phylosophies. I take the ideas as I understand them and put them in a medium which is realistic and fantastic at the same time, in an attempt to captivate the audience with the mysticism of the proposal. But my interests are far from being religious or political, but rather social and cultural. The children play a very important role in history, even when only count those who in their future adultness were able to actually make history.
Finally I have come to conclude that art lacks any sense and importance in the very moment you try to be hermetic and twisted in its retoric, this only sends away those who do not have any pretensions and confuses even more those who, in their effort to demonstrate their “cultural superiority”, assume and accept proposals made from the “unreachable heights of Art.” "
