Frank STEWART
Artist’s statement :
My intent in the medium of photography has always been culturally motivated." said Stewart. "I have used it to define a culture from within; the reference is to the American culture that I come from. Central to this is the African American contribution in general and its contribution of jazz in particular." He continues: "In order to know where you are going, you first have to know where you come from. My interest in the music stems from the history of it. Where it came from, where it went, and how it came to be in the form that it is today. The first part of the journey took me to Africa to find the origins. The second to the Caribbean and the third leg of my journey took me to New Orleans. The music began, was codified and changed all along the way." These images of his travels round the world represent aspects of that journey.
